"Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, or other multilateral body, which introduces students to the world of diplomacy, negotiation, and decision making.Model UN at Willow Glen is a great opportunity for students to gain experience in the world of politics as well as improve their skills in research, communication, and debate. At the beginning of the year, the group will be assigned a country by Model UN program managers. Students will be expected to do research throughout the year on current issues affecting the assigned country, as well as the country's political views. The goal for the students is to become knowledgeable on the country, with the intention of participating in a conference later on in the year with other high schools.
[Students will] prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the UN’s rules of procedure – all in the interest of resolving problems that affect the world.
Before playing out their ambassadorial roles in Model UN, students research the particular global problem to be addressed. The problems are drawn from today’s headlines. Model UN delegates learn how the international community acts on its concerns about peace and security, human rights, the environment, food and hunger, economic development, and globalization."
